Appropriate fish feeding
One of the fish keeping pleasure is when you feed your pet fish. But mistake in feeding your fish can lead to deterioration of important water parameters.
Right amount of food
Almost all fish have small belly and can only eat a small portion of fish food at one time. A basic rule : give fish food as the fish can eat up in 2-3 minutes, including remains food at the bottom. Fish instinctive habit is constantly looking for food, so don't let this behaviour temp you to overfeed them. You will only create unnecessary amount of debris in your aquarium.
Variety of fish food
If you give the same fish food everyday, however healthy it may be, it is boring in the long run and spoils the appetite. You should give your pet fish a variety of fish food, such as they are accustomed to in the nature. One important thing is your food should be fresh and hygienic. It's safer to give dried food like krill, mosquito larva, tubifex worm, daphnia or water fleas from reputable brand to ensure the quality and absolute freshness. Don't buy fish food in a big package, but instead staple food in a small package (50-250 ml container) which can be used up within max. 2 months, so you can be sure that your fish always get fresh and high quality fish food.
How frequent and when
Adult fish need less frequent feeding than young fish. One or two times per day are sufficient for adult fish, while young fish should be fed 3-4 times daily and it should be evenly spaced throughout the day.
Feeding ring usage
Feeding ring is a tool to make fish food concentrated within a little area at the water surface. Its purpose is to avoid the water surface scattered with fish food and then be sucked by a surface /protein skimmer or a trickle filter. Disadvantage of using feeding-ring: bigger & dominant fish will eat up the fish food, while smaller and shy fish will starve.
During Vacation
You can enjoy your long weekends or vacation without worrying about your fish.
- Just give a Vacation food block which is a time release fish food to conveniently feed your fish while you are away. Each food block provides your fish with essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals for continued health and disease resistance during your absence.
There's also a new technology : Gel feeder block which contains no plaster, it won't dissolve /disintegrate on its own therefore it won't pollute (cloud) water or negatively effect water quality. It allows fish to eat when hungry, it is made with all-natural ingredients, vitamins and nutrients for optimal health and may be left in the aquarium when regular feeding is resumed.
