Smelly Water
Your aquarium water should smell fresh. If unpleasant odor appears, it may be a sign of an underlying problem with your aquarium water conditions.
Smelly water usually caused by :
-
Lack of oxygen supply. It creates imperfect oxidation of ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4). Very toxic side effect result like phenol substance will occur, which is very smelly and dangerous for your organisms.
-
Anaerobic spots within your tank. Protein disentanglement in anaerobic condition will form H2S (Hidrogen Sulfide) & PH3/ Phosphine gas, which are smelly and dangerous toxin for fishes.
Good aquarium filtration along with good circulation (by applying aeration, surface agitation and middle-water flows) will provide enough oxygen that spreads evenly to eliminate the anaerobic spots within your tank. Good turtle tanks can also smell fresh.
